Bow Hunting: Quiet Like A Ninja

At one time, bow hunting was reserved for royalty. The poor masses could not partake in this noble form of hunting. Thankfully, we live in more egalitarian times, and bow hunting is available to all of us.

What will make you a successful bow hunter? An encyclopedia can be written to answer that question. Right now, though, let’s examine the importance of sound.

Please Don’t Hear Me!

Remember that deer make decisions. One of those decisions is: do I run, or do I stay put? You’ve probably seen a deer trying to make that decision. He knows there’s something different out there, and that difference is you.

And why is he trying to make that decision? Because he heard a sound that he doesn’t normally hear out there in the woods. And that sound was made by you.

If he decides to stay put, and you’re within 40 yards, that’s great. But he might just decide to hike on out of there. Can you blame him? No. The best thing you can do is to try to make it so he doesn’t have to make that decision in the first place.

Be Quiet, Ninja Hunter!

Make sure your equipment is well maintained. This will minimize any unnatural noises. Ideally, purchase most or all of your equipment from the same manufacturer. When everything fits, there’s less chance of noise.

Before the season starts, practice with some archery targets. This will help strengthen the muscles you’ll use while hunting. The more fit you are as a person, the quieter you are going to be as a hunter.
